Velocity Measurements in Highly Aerated Flow on a Stepped Chute without Sidewall Constraint Using a BIV Technique

چکیده

The lack of sidewalls in a spillway leads to lateral expansion the flow and, consequently, non-uniform transversal rate distribution along chute. present work shows velocity field measured physical model 1 V:0.8 H steeply sloping stepped without sidewalls. An application Bubble Image Velocimetry (BIV) technique self-aerated region is shown, using air bubbles entrained into downstream inception point as tracers. results indicate that, for small dimensionless discharges and sufficiently inception, free-surface compares relatively well with corresponding air–water interfacial previously obtained double-tip fiber optical probe same facility. In turn, profiles normal pseudo-bottom, far point, are reasonably agreement inner part skimming flow, largest differences being verified upper near free-surface.

Micro- and Macro-scopic Study of Two-phase Flow on a Stepped Chute

Stepped chute flows are characterised by intense turbulence and strong flow aeration (Fig. 1), but most studies did not investigate the turbulence characteristics. Detailed air-water flow properties were measured in skimming flow on a stepped chute (θ = 16o, h = 0.05 m). Longitudinal oscillations of depth-averaged flow properties were observed with a wave length of about two step cavity lengths...

Air–water flow properties in step cavity down a stepped chute

For the last three decades, the research into skimming flows down stepped chutes was driven by needs for better design guidelines. The skimming flow is characterised by some momentum transfer from the main stream to the recirculation zones in the shear layer developing downstream of each step edge. In the present study some physical modelling was conducted in a relatively large facility and det...

Development of a Low Cost and Safe PIV for Mean Flow Velocity and Reynolds Stress Measurements

In this study, a white light particle image velocimetry (WL PIV) system which employs a light sheet generated with a flash was used. The system was developed in order to provide a cost-efficient and safe alternative to laser systems while keeping the accuracy limits required for hydraulic model tests. To investigate the accuracy of WL PIV method under different flow conditions, experiments were...

Flow Regime Prediction in Stepped Channels Using Neural Computing Technique

A chute is characterized by a steep bed slope associated with torrential flow. This chute flow may be either smooth or stepped. The flow conditions in stepped channels are classified as nappe flow, transition flow and skimming flow. In this paper, hydraulic characteristics of flow regimes on the stepped channels are presented systematically under a wide range of discharge, channel slope and ste...

Air speed and velocity measurements in a room with a sidewall jet

In mixing ventilation systems, diffusers are often located on side walls and supply quasi-free air jets above the occupied zone. The data presented in this paper shows a new CFD 3D benchmark with two well-defined characteristic zones in the room, i.e., the quasi-free jet zone and the occupied zone. Measurement methods adequate for air velocity and speed measurement were applied: laser Doppler a...
